Insight into Sanatan Dharma by Pandit Siddharth Sharma Ji
Since the beginning of civilization, it has been natural for humans to be curious about the future. The future always remains a mystery. A person who exists today may not be here tomorrow. A poor person may become wealthy, and a wealthy person may become poor. The desire to know this mystery has always driven humanity. Various practices like worshipping spirits, yoga, and siddhis (mystical powers) have been attempted. Finally, astrology was developed. The effort to understand a person’s past, future, and present by analyzing the positions of planets and stars at the time of birth is called astrology or horoscopy. The primary task of astrology is to determine the positions and movements of planets and stars and predict their effects on an individual.
Astrology has been practiced since the times of renowned astronomers like Bhaskaracharya and Varahamihira. However, today, the term “astrology” is often used exclusively to refer to horoscopy or predictive astrology. The branch of astronomy that deals with the movements of celestial bodies is called “Khagola Shastra” (astronomy).
Predictive astrology is believed by scholars to have originated in India around the 2nd or 3rd century BCE from Yavaneshwara’s “Yavanajataka,” which came from the Greeks. He was in the court of the Western Shaka Satrap ruler Rudradaman I around 270 CE. Scholars have hypothesized that the framework of the Indian Panchang (almanac) must have been completed over 300 years, up to Aryabhata’s time (476 CE) from the ancient “Sphujidhvaja” texts. It is said that the practice of naming seven days of the week after the seven planets was established during that time in India.
There are, however, certain elements in the Indian Panchang that precede Ptolemaic astrology, as identified by scholars. Unfortunately, the earlier texts are entirely lost. The “Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra” and “Saravali” texts composed by Kalyanavarman contain 71 chapters and belong to the 7th-8th century CE. Varahamihira, who was said to be in Vikramaditya’s court (505-587 CE), wrote the famous “Panchasiddhantika” text. In addition to that, his “Brihat Samhita” provides insights into astronomy, predictive astrology, and horoscope construction. His “Brihat Jataka” is an extensive work on predictive astrology.
Pandit Siddharth Sharma has provided simple yet scientific information about Vastu Shastra and its core principles. According to him, Vastu is not just about the construction of a building; it should also consider the essential aspect of “Aaya” (energy) to ensure harmony, peace, and prosperity. Instead of merely following Vastu for temporary financial gains, it should be adhered to for overall development and comfortable living.
He highlighted the misconception surrounding Vastu in today’s times and how people are making significant mistakes in this area. Vastu Shastra is currently a popular topic, but people are using it to make money. However, the core of Vastu is the energy (“Aaya”), which is often forgotten today. It is important to ensure the proper energy flow before constructing any house or building, as only then will the Vastu Purusha (the spirit of the building) provide its best results. Otherwise, even if the building is constructed according to Vastu, it may not guarantee peace, tranquility, and economic growth.
